While I usually enjoy material from '67-69 the most, I think it's hard to deny that their best group improv fell between '72 and '74. What do you think are the best examples of their improvisational skills?

For me:

DS 8/27/72

PITB 5/21/74

For me it's the That's It for the Other One suite from 4/28/71.

Thanks for all the feedback folks! Much appreciated. Already familiar with most of these but there's a few I need to check out, and a many I need to re-listen to.

Jerlouvis...amazing rec's dude. You were right on the money with the kind of jams I was looking for.

Good call on that Good Lovin'. Givin' it another spin right now.

You must mean the 9/21/72 DS, also another great pick and my 2nd favorite DS. I was thinking about including that in my 3 picks, but felt I needed to include an Other One. Those are the 3 most essential GD songs for me when I want to hear great improv.

And my 3rd favorite DS, also from late '72 (the peak period for DS), is this gem:

Yeah--9/21. It's been a while! I recall the show--which is consistent, I thought they were starting to lose it in the Star when that riff started up out of nowhere. The the wind down into the Dew. I taped that show but lost the cassette decades ago. When they released in on DP, I still had that last ten minutes etched in my mind. That whole fall was premium.

Right. It's clear 'Fall '72' serves nicely in response to the original query. Just look @ jerlouvis' list below!

The 1971/08/06 Hard To Handle has got to be a great example of the whole band (not just Jerry) being on the money improvisation wise:

Great call; interesting in that most folks hereabouts wouldn't have picked it, I am guessing, since it is not a "traditional" jam tune (ie, DS, Eleven, whatever)...but, the truth is, on this one esp (and others of course, excepting those MEATY-OAK-ER versions in late April of 71), they defn extend it, and do more with it than ANY other version, and during shows on either side of this date, they do much shorter versions (who knows what prompted this...the 64 $ question I suppose) that never "get anywhere" jam wise.

As I have said many times, I've picked THIS one to play for any number of folks and said "wait til you hear THIS!" for whatever aspect I am selling that day on the DEAD.

I would add D.S.>El Paso>Eyes>Dew from 8-1-73. Please excuse my limited computer skills. I don't know how to post the link.
